Exploratory Classes
Exploratory Classes provide opportunities for students to engage in learning activities related to their interests. Gordon Parks is proud to offer many options for students!
Art šØ
In Art, students develop their understanding of the elements and principles of design, explore the cultural origins of art, study notable artists and their work, and learn to critique artwork. Students create meaningful works of their own and have opportunities to collaborate with local artists. Student artwork is also displayed in art shows at the Wichita Art Museum and other local galleries.
Band š·
In Band, students learn to play an instrument while developing skills in creating, performing, and responding to music. Instruction is provided by an instrumental music teacher, and students gain experience collaborating as part of an ensemble. In addition to traditional band classes, seventh- and eighth-grade students have the opportunity to participate in Jazz Band.
Choir/Vocal Music š¤
In Choir/Vocal Music, students learn about a variety of musical styles while exploring history, culture, and theory through song. Students also practice sight-reading daily to develop independent musicianship.
Gaming Concepts š®
Gaming Concepts at Gordon Parks Academy integrates video game-based learning with core academic skills. Students explore game design, esports, and digital literacy while developing teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking. The curriculum connects gaming to real-world applications and prepares students for future careers in technology and interactive media.
Student Technology Leadership š±
Our Student Technology Leadership class focuses on social media and digital marketing as part of the STEM Leaders in Applied and Media Arts magnet theme. Students learn digital safety, content creation, data analysis, and modern media tools through project-based learning. Their work highlights life at GPA through high-quality digital content shared in the school and on social media. The course develops real-world skills applicable to future careers in marketing and media.
Orchestra š»
In Orchestra, students learn to play an instrument while developing skills in creating, performing, and responding to music. Instruction is provided by an instrumental music teacher, and students gain experience collaborating as part of an ensemble.
Physical Education šš½
In Physical Education, students develop skills through participation in a variety of activities, including volleyball, flag football, and more. Students remain active while learning about social responsibility, teamwork, and problem-solving. The class also covers the fundamentals of each game and activity.
Technology š„ļø
In sixth-grade Technology, students learn to operate and use computers and other technological tools for productivity, problem-solving, and learning, with a focus on foundational skills and digital literacy. Middle school technology classes for seventh and eighth grade are PLTW (Project Lead The Way) courses and include Robotics (competitive and non-competitive), Introduction to Manufacturing, Introduction to Engineering, Explorations in Technology, and Computer Coding.
Yearbook š
In Yearbook class, students learn the fundamentals of journalism, photography, design, and storytelling while creating the school’s annual yearbook. They practice interviewing, writing captions and articles, capturing high-quality photos, and designing layouts using industry-standard software. The yearbook program and student photography have received multiple awards, including an annual award from the Kansas Scholastic Press Association since 2018 and recognition from Entourage Yearbook. The course emphasizes collaboration, creativity, and accuracy as students work together to document the school year and produce a professional final publication.
VEX Robotics š¤
Our award-winning VEX Robotics program engages students in engineering, coding, problem-solving, and teamwork. The team has received recognition at both state and world competitions for excellence in design, strategy, and innovation. The program also includes events such as the VEX Robotics Wichita Signature Event, which brought an international group of teams to compete in Wichita. Students gain authentic, high-level STEM experiences that prepare them for future academic and career pathways.
Photography Elective šø
Our Photography elective teaches students professional-level skills in composition, lighting, editing, and visual storytelling. Students practice creative techniques, capture a range of images, and build a portfolio that reflects their developing technical skills and artistic vision.
Audio/Video Production š¬
Our professional Audio/Video Production class teaches students skills in both audio and video creation. Students learn to record, edit, and produce using professional tools, including a soundboard, sound booth, and Macs equipped with industry-standard software. They apply these skills to create a variety of projects that demonstrate their creativity and technical proficiency, including producing the school’s morning announcements.
Graphic Design & Teen View Magazine š
Our 6th–8th grade Graphic Design students create the April edition of Teen View Magazine. Students research and write informative articles on topics of their choice, conduct short interviews, and design their magazine spreads using Affinity Publisher on Mac computers. They also produce short commercials and PDAs, gaining hands-on experience in writing and digital media creation. The class meets weekly with community partner Ricky Lasley, who provides instruction in professional, job, and life skills.
