Exploratory Classes

Exploratory Classes provide opportunities for students to engage in learning activities related to their interests. Gordon Parks is proud to offer many options for students!

Art šŸŽØ

In art, students develop their understanding of the elements and principles of design, explore the cultural origins of art, study notable artists and their work, learn to critique artwork, and most importantly, create meaningful works of their own. Our art teacher also partners with local artists to collaborate with students and helps organize art shows where student work is displayed at the Wichita Art Museum and other local galleries across Wichita.

Band šŸŽ·

In band, students are taught to play an instrument while learning to create, perform, and respond to music! They get instruction from an instrumental music teacher while gaining the experience of collaborating with an ensemble. In addition to our traditional band classes, 7th and 8th grade students have the opportunity to participate in Jazz Band.

Choir/Vocal Music šŸŽ¤

In choir/vocal music, students learn about all forms of music. Students learn about history, culture, and theory through song. Additionally, students practice sight-reading music daily to build independent musicianship.

Gaming Concepts šŸŽ®

In gaming concepts, students practice real-life skills via video game activities. The curriculum covers digital citizenship, social emotional learning, gamer health, technology skills, future readiness, sportsmanship, and more.

Student Technology Leadership šŸ›”ļø

Students learn about valuable skills through sessions about managing group dynamics, communication skills, project management, emotional intelligence, and conflict resolution. As a result of the highly-structured opportunities provided, students develop skills to help them be leaders in and out of the school.

Orchestra šŸŽ»

In orchestra, students are taught to play an instrument while learning to create, perform, and respond to music! They get instruction from an instrumental music teacher while gaining the experience of collaborating with an ensemble.

Physical Education šŸƒšŸ½

In physical education, students develop skills as they participate in multiple activities, from volleyball to flag football. Students will always be active and learn about social responsibility, team building, and problem-solving. Your child will also learn all the basics of every game and activity they play.

Technology šŸ–„ļø

In technology, students will learn to operate and use computers and other technological tools for productivity, problem-solving, and learning. Our technology classes are PLTW (Project Lead The Way) courses. Technology classes include Robotics (competitive and non-competitive), Introduction to Manufacturing, Introduction to Engineering, Explorations in Technology, and Computer Coding.

Yearbook šŸ“˜
In yearbook class, students learn the fundamentals of journalism, photography, design, and storytelling as they create the school’s annual yearbook. They practice interviewing, writing captions and articles, capturing strong photos, and designing professional layouts using industry-standard software. Our yearbook program and student photography have earned multiple awards, reflecting the high level of skill and creativity students develop. The course emphasizes collaboration, creativity, and accuracy as students work together to document the school year and produce a polished final publication.

VEX Robotics šŸ¤–
Our award-winning VEX Robotics program engages students in engineering, coding, problem-solving, and teamwork. The team has earned recognition at both state and world competitions, demonstrating excellence in design, strategy, and innovation. Recently, our Robotics teacher led and managed the VEX Robotics Wichita Signature Event, which brought an international group of teams to compete in Wichita. This program provides students with authentic, high-level STEM experiences that prepare them for future academic and career pathways.

Photography Elective šŸ“ø
Our Photography elective teaches students professional-level photography skills, from composition and lighting to editing and storytelling. Students explore creative techniques, capture compelling images, and develop a portfolio of work that showcases their talent and vision.

Audio/Video Production šŸŽ¬
Our professional Audio/Video Production class teaches students skills in both audio and video creation. Students learn to record, edit, and produce using professional tools, including a soundboard, sound booth, and Macs with industry-standard software. They apply these skills to produce projects that showcase their creativity and technical expertise, including producing our school’s morning announcements.

Graphic Design & Teen View Magazine šŸ–Œ

Our 6th–8th grade Graphic Design class creates the April edition of Teen View Magazine! Students research and write informative articles on topics of their choice, conduct short interviews, and design their spreads using Affinity Publisher on Macs. They also create short commercials and PDAs, gaining hands-on experience in both writing and digital design. Our Teen View Magazine community partner, Ricky Lasley, teaches the class once a week, sharing professional job and life skills with students.
